Oxidative Stress and The Causes

Oxidative stress is damage in the body caused by an imbalance between harmful free radicals (reactive oxygen species) and antioxidants.

It is known to increase aging process, reduce longevity, and promote the development of many chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Causes

Environmental pollution, pesticides and toxins in food, poor dietary choices, excessive damage to the body, lack of exogeneous antioxidants in diets, lack of endogenous antioxidants production in the body and stress.

When looking to slow the aging process and increase longevity, oxidative stress is closely related and one of the most important factors to address .

Oxidative stress is a broad term referring to the cellular damage accumulated from stresses on the body causing free radical formation without enough antioxidant support to deal with the stress. Think of free radicals as the robbers that go around stealing from cells while causing damage and antioxidants as police that neutralize the free radicals and put them in jail.
Note: antioxidants may come from the diet (exogenous) or be produced in the body (endogenous) and their function is to reduce oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals.

Most people are unaware of the many lifestyle factors that may be causing oxidative stress and speeding up the aging process while reducing longevity. Tomorrow’s post and article will cover these factors and some strategies to reduce oxidative stress, slow the aging process, and improve longevity.
